GAA: Shrule-Glencorrib triumph as Claremorris rue missed chances By Michael Commins South Mayo Minor ?A? Final Shrule-Glencorrib 0-7, Claremorris 0-3 The South Mayo Minor ?A? Cup will spend the Winter in the border countryside around Shrule and Glencorrib. But even their most loyal supporters will admit that they were fortunate to survive a second half onslaught by Claremorris whose squandermania in Hollymount on Saturday evening just had to be seen to be believed. Seldom has a team won such possession and still managed to lose a game. This was a poor game and one which will not live for long in the memory. True, there were a number of decent performances from a few individuals, but it certainly was never in the running for a ?Hall of Fame? classic award. Backed by the wind, Shrule-Glencorrib made most of the chances that came their way in the first half. They were far more economical and had established a four points lead after 20 minutes. Their first score from a sideline by Kieran Conroy was reminiscent of Colm Coyle?s famous equalizer against Mayo in the drawn All-Ireland of 1996 when it hopped over the bar. Sean McMorrow, a player with a fine turn of speed, notched number two, while Dermot Ryan posted the others. Claremorris had to wait until the 26th minute to get on the board with Pat O?Sullivan steering over a good point. Shane Meehan added one from a free two minutes later. Just before the interval, Simon Murphy saw his effort rebound off the crossbar and Pat O?Sullivan was on hand to guide it to the net but referee John Boyle deemed it a ?square ball? and awarded a free out. When James Boyle reduced the margin to the minimum with a point after two minutes of the second half, Claremorris were in the perfect position to hit the glory trail. And even though the highly influential Dermot Ryan stroked over a point free for the leaders, it was Claremorris who were now very much in the ascendant. For the next 15 minutes, there was a virtual one way roll of attacks towards the Shrule-Glencorrib posts. But despite a monopoly of possession, some desperate and wayward shooting yielded absolutely nothing except a stream of ferocious wides that were to cost them dearly. The game was two minutes from the end of normal time when Pat ?Pele? Gavin eventually relieved the siege and took Shrule-Glencorrib three clear. But Claremorris were back pressing for an equaliser and Brian Gallagher?s classy strike for goal was met with perhaps the save of the year at this venue as Pat Conroy flung himself across the goal to deflect the ball around the post. A late point from Dermot Ryan sealed victory for the resilient lads from the southern territory. Dermot Ryan played a central role in steering Shrule-Glencorrib to victory and his inspirational play and quality scores were most decisive. Tom Byrne at fullback deserves a special accolade as well for his many timely clearances. Goalie Pat Conroy had an excellent game while Seamus O?Dowd, Neil Sullivan and Kevin Duffy were prominent in defence. Sean McMorrow, Peter Gerard McCarthy and Kieran Conroy were others to impress for the winners. James Boyle was, without doubt, the top performer on the Claremorris team. He won a huge amount of possession around centrefield. The defence also played with a lot of heart and courage with Niall Griffin, Jonathan Griffin and Ian Walsh especially to the fore. Jason Byrne, Pat O?Sullivan and Brian Gallagher all lending a decent hand. Mattie Joe Connolly, chairman of the South Board, presided at the presentation of the Cup to Tom Byrne, captain of the victorious panel. Scorers ? Shrule-Glencorrib: D. Ryan 0-4 (2f), K. Conroy, S.
