2. Origami Class
Anyone interested in learning Origami (Japanese Folding Paper Craft) can add their name to the class list in the Information Hub. Classes will be held on nominated Saturdays 13:00-14:00 from May.
The cost is €2 per one hour session. Paper & materials will be provided. Participants should be from 8 years & upwards.

In Times Gone By – The Round Park

The Round Park is an eleven acre field in the townland of Ramolin at the back of Shrule National School. It has been the property of the McGath Family of Lakeview House for many generations and it is here that many different kinds of sporting and community activities have been held down through the years.
For example, many different kinds of races were held there, races like the 100 yard sprint, the 400 and 800 metre as well. People would come from a long ways around to take part. I recall one man named Carter came up from Oughterard every year to run in the long distance race. At that time he was at the end of his days but I believe he was a very good runner in his younger days.
There was also a bicycle race held. People would try to win it by fair means or by sheer power. It was nothing at all for one cyclist to try to knock another off his bike. These bikes were high nellie bikes as there were very few proper racing bikes around then. I remember Paddy Meneghan from Church Park was an expert at leaning in at another cyclist and trying to knock him off his bike and trying to stick his pedals into the spokes of another man’s bicycle.
The Grand Finale was the Farmer’s Race and the local farmers’ horses ran a full lap around the Round Park. John Craddock (Steel) from Shrule had a small black mare who won it every year. One year big Mike Mongan the tinsmith had a great pony, a piebald, great for pulling a cart on the road, and he thought he might win the horse race with him. Dick Geraghty from Shrule was a great jockey and it was him who rode Mike Mongan’s pony. But when this little pony came up against the big horses he didn’t stand a chance and he came last. I’ll never forget Dick stretched out full length on the pony’s back and although he was going flat out, he still came in last. A gymkhana was also held in the Round Park. Good jumping horses took part, one of whom was The Quiet Man owned by Joe Fair from Headford. This horse was afterwards sold to the Italian Jumping Team and later became a world famous jumper. The Daly family from Lough Mask were very much into horses and owned a Connemara pony who was a great jumper but she could never jump fast and so she was called Slow Motion, but she really was a beauty to watch jumping.
I remember there were football matches for under 14 boys from the local parishes. I was on the leading team one year and we were two points ahead and I put out my hand and the ball went into our own goal and we lost by a point! Not to worry, the same thing happened Billy Casey, the great Mayo footballer, up in Roscommon in a county final and they lost to Roscommon by a point in Hyde Park.
In 1945 Canon Kyne P.P. started a seven-a-side football tournament in the Round Park to raise money for the upkeep of the Parish schools and churches. [more from Seán on the Round Park & Hare Coursing in the next Newsletter on April 13, 2013].
